Resveratrol is a natural compound found in grapes, red wine, peanuts and the plant Polygonum cuspidatum. It first gained interest as one of the active ingredients in red wine responsible for the French Paradox, the fact that the French have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, despite consuming a high fat diet. Resveratrol's potent antioxidant activities are believed to be due to its protective effects on the cellular membranes.
