Sugar? No…. honey honey. Manuka honey is made from the nectar of Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) trees. It contains naturally occurring Methylglyoxal (MGO), a substance that occurs naturally in Manuka honey which has antimicrobial activity. The higher the level of MGO, the higher the level of antimicrobial action.
All honey has hydrogen peroxide in it which gives most honey its antibiotic quality. In New Zealand in the 1980’s, Professor Peter Molan discovered that in the case of Manuka honey, the antibiotic action quality remained even after the hydrogen peroxide was removed!
Manuka honey is a prebiotic, an anti-inflammatory and kills certain antibiotic-resistant bacteria and pathogens (aka superbugs). Great for sore throats and gingivitis! It is a very impressive wound healer which reduces healing time, scarring and draws dead tissues and foreign bodies from a wound, all the while, keeping the wound moist and reducing any odour.
